So you bought a Coal and Canary candle? Yaaas diva!
You are going to be treated to a super fun and sensory experience, which is sure to make Coal and Canary among your favourite candles
to burn!
Coal and Canary candles are made with the highest quality soy blend wax and true to scent synthetic fragrance oils, which will fill your entire room with fragrance without becoming overpowering! You see that piece of wood coming out of the candle? That’s the wick! Pretty cool, right? Our wicks are made from organic and untreated wood, which will provide you with a unique burn experience and produce a soft crackling sound when lit, like your own little fire place!
Here are some tips to get the most enjoyable experience from your new Coal and Canary candle!
Lets start with the basics.
The following guidelines apply to the burning of all candles including Coal and Canary candles.
• Never leave a burning candle unattended.
• Keep burning candles away from flammable materials, children and pets.
• Do not place candles on or near other heat sources.
• Burn the candles on heat resistant surfaces
• Extinguish candles with great care ensuring that hot wax does not splatter.
• Keep the hot wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or any other flammable materials
• Do not allow anything to drop into the hot wax pool such as parts of the wick or a match
My candle isn’t burning the way I think it should…
Let’s be real, wooden wicks are gorge, but because of their nature they can sometimes be temperamental! Just like how every tree is slightly different, each wooden wick is also slightly different. This is because before our wicks were made, they were trees! Amazing, right? Because our wooden wicks are made with an organic and untreated wood, slight variances in the wood thickness and grain will cause every Coal and Canary candle to burn a little bit differently. Despite these variances, we are firm believers that wooden wicks provide a more unique, luxurious and delightful sensory experience than traditional cotton wicks do, and we are sure you will agree with us!
Help! My candle is smoking!
Under ideal burning conditions your Coal and Canary candle will be virtually smoke free! However, any candle has the potential to produce smoke and soot if not burned and cared for properly.
Here are some tips to get a smoke-free burn from your candle!
• Ensure your wick is always trimmed to 1/4" before each burn, the longer the wick, the more chance of smoking
• Do not place your candles in a drafty area such as a hallway, near a window or by a fireplace
• When a candle is placed in a drafty area, the draft can cause the flame to produce smoke
• Once the draft is removed, the candle should return to normal
• Do not burn your candle for longer than 3 hours at a time.
We want you to love and enjoy your Coal and Canary candle, however we only recommend enjoying it for a maximum of three hours at a time! Like any good diva, working her too hard will cause you some trouble! We have found that burning your candle for longer than 3 hours at a time increases the risk of smoking due to the wick being too long and the flame burning too hot! Always allow the wax to fully cool and harden before relighting.
What if I did all of these things and my candle is still smoking?
Smoke is caused by the candle burning too hot. One thing that we have found that works wonders if your candle is producing smoke after it is lit for a few minutes, carefully tilt the candle 45 degrees for five seconds. This helps to seal up some of the pores of the wood and will help the flame burn slightly lower.
Help! My candle won’t stay lit!
Because our wooden wicks are made of organic untreated material, in rare cases you may find that you have difficultly keeping the flame lit.
Here are some tips if your candle snuffs out!
• A diva needs to warm up, give her a hot minute!
• We have found that the majority of issues with Coal and Canary candles not lighting happens on the first time you light the candle
• Typically the first light of your candle will always be the lowest and slowest burn
• If your candle extinguishes the first time you light it, simply try relighting it until it catches ( In rare cases it may take multiple lights).
• If the flame still does not take, allow the candle to cool and break off the charred pieces of wick off with your finger or a wick trimmer to
reopen the pores of the wood and help the flame burn hotter
• As the first burn is the most important with any candle, we encourage you to allow your candle to burn at least two hours the first time you
light it!
Help! My candle flame seems unusually large!
This may be due to a defective wick. Please discontinue use and email a photo of your candle lit to info@coalandcanary.com.
It looks like the wax is drowning out the wick!
We recommend burning your Coal and Canary long enough to achieve a full melt pool every time you light it! This means that all of the wax on the top of the candle is melted right to the edges. This may be 1-2 hours. If you are consistently burning the candle for shorter amounts of time and not allowing the wax to melt to the edges of the glass you may notice the candle start to tunnel. We do not recommend cutting out the excess wax to fix the tunneling. If you allow your candle to burn for longer periods of time, this problem should begin to solve itself.
OTHER COMMON QUESTIONS
How long will my candle burn for?
Coal and Canary candles will burn for roughly 50-60 hours (8oz size). This range is due to the nature of each of our wooden wicks burning slightly different.
Do I need to trim the wooden wick?
In most cases our wooden wicks are self-trimming, meaning you don’t need to do anything to them in between burning sessions. If your wick is longer than ½” after you extinguish the flame, allow it to cool completely and trim the wick to roughly ¼” before relighting. Always make sure to remove all of the wick trimmings from the wax prior to relighting or it can discolor your wax! Trimming the wick reopens the pores of the wood, causing your flame to burn hotter and higher, which can sometimes increase the risk of your candle producing soot!
What are these air bubbles on the side of my candle?
On occasion you may notice what looks like an air bubble between the wax and the glass. This is purely cosmetic and will not affect the way that your Coal and Canary candle burns. It happens because soy wax is more temperature sensitive than other types of wax and when the candles are exposed to cold, the wax can shrink. Lets face it, we are from the arctic and they don’t make parkas that small.
Do you produce candles in different sizes?
Currently we only produce 8oz size candles, however stay tuned for other sizes coming in the future!
Do you do custom candles for weddings?
Because of the volumes required to do custom projects, we unfortunately do not take requests for custom candles for weddings.
Does Coal and Canary offer donations?
Coal and Canary Candle Company receives more donation requests than we can support.
Ineligible donation requests include:
• Financial support or cash donations
• Religious organizations or events
• Political organizations or events
• Social prizes
• Support for individuals
• Sporting events or teams
• People individually raising money for a non-profit organization

Giving will be determined on a case-by- case basis. Please allow one week for response.
